Frequently Asked Questions
Do you take insurance?
I am a Medicare provider. For non-Medicare clients , I can provide you with a special receipt which you can then submit for out-of-network reimbursement. It is up to you to determine whether your plan offers out-of-network benefits and to submit the claim for reimbursement.
What forms of payment do you accept?
I accept cash, checks, or credit cards. You may also use funds from a Heath Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account.
What happens if I need to cancel an appointment?
If you need to cancel an appointment, please do so within 24 hours. I do charge a fee of $75 for cancellations within less than 24 hours unless we agree that you were unable to attend due to circumstances beyond your control.
Is our work confidential?
Yes, counseling - and all of my services - are confidential. I am bound by law to uphold your privacy unless you disclose a plan/intent to harm another person or yourself or unless you disclose that a child, elder, vulnerable adult, or animal in your care is at risk of imminent harm. When we begin work together, we will discuss client-therapist confidentiality in more detail.
How long will I be in counseling?
The short answer is: it depends. Many factors affect the duration of counseling. Together we will make a plan to measure progress toward your goals. Most of my clients feel that they have made sufficient progress in 3-12 months. That said, some people stay longer and some feel ready more quickly. Progress of therapy depends greatly on the work you put in outside of sessions, as well as consistency of attendance. My hope is that we can get you to a place that you don't need me anymore!
Do you work with people who have issues unrelated to animals?
My practice specializes in counseling for pet owners and animal professionals such as veterinarians, vet techs, and animal welfare specialists. However, if you do not have an animal-related issue and if my approach and philosophy resonates with you, let's talk and see if we are a good fit. If not, I would be happy to provide a referral to a colleague who can help.
Can I bring my pet to sessions?
As a veterinary social worker, my work focuses on the human side of the human-animal bond. Also, in order for you to be the caregiver you want to be, it is important for you to get time and space to take of yourself, without any distractions. So, photos and videos are welcome, but please leave your pet at home. If it is difficult for you to leave your pet home for the time needed to attend sessions, please contact me and we will troubleshoot the situation together.
